All the evidence shows that older people in Devon would like to get outside more if they were given more confidence to do so. A new flagship initiative from the Devon Local Nature Partnership is tackling this lack of confidence and the growing inactivity amongst people aged 55 and over in Devon.
Connecting Actively to Nature (CAN) is working through a wide range of local health, wellbeing, conservation, ageing and wildlife partners to help people develop the confidence to enjoy and access the natural surroundings on their doorstep. The five year programme is funded by Sport England through Lottery sales and is being seen as one of the flagship national initiatives to tackle inactivity amongst older people.
One of the partners, Age UK Devon warmly invites you to come along to our outdoor social club at Stover Country Park, Newton Abbot TQ12 6QG on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month, 10am – 12.30pm, starting on 10th September. Download the poster here: CAN – Outdoor Actvity Club Poster (pdf)
Older people aged 55 and over will be able to enjoy a range of outdoor activities, such as themed walks and learning about the natural environment and wildlife with the emphasis on becoming more active in a natural environment, improving overall wellbeing and fitness and making new friends! At £3 a session, including refreshments, you can book using the contacts below.
Trish Warren, Active in Later Life Manager for Age UK Devon said, “The Stover Outdoor Club will provide a unique opportunity for people aged 55+ to enjoy a broad range of activities, supported by our trained volunteers and the Rangers. Stover Park is an ideal venue for the Club as it is accessible to all and is on a main bus route from local towns. No matter what your level of fitness or mobility, the Outdoor Club is an ideal opportunity to enjoy a walk in the beautiful surroundings, learn about the local environment and enjoy a cuppa and a chat at the end of the session”.
Could you volunteer? Age UK Devon is one of the partners driving CAN work in Devon and we are actively seeking new CAN volunteers to perform a whole range of different roles from putting in a call to people who are new to a session to see if they need help to access it or simply welcoming them on the day and keeping them included in all aspects of the activity. There is even room for the tech savvy ones amongst us to keep Facebook groups up to date with local CAN opportunities or you may just be one of our scouts who will go out and hunt out cafes and venues to put a poster up. Does this sound interesting? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
