Ladles of Positivity from Young People at Dawlish SOUP Event
Following a number of successful SOUP Community Fundraising events across the district, Dawlish ROC (Redeeming Our Communities) and Teignbridge Community & Voluntary Services organised a Youth SOUP which took place on Thursday 21st March at the Beach Bar in Dawlish.
There were close to forty people present, a third of them under 18. Five pitches were made on the night, four of them by young people themselves. Teenagers from organisations local youth clubs and organisations presented their project to a room packed full of people but also some brave individuals shared their community benefitting ideas.
“The beauty of this kind of event is that it is not just about the money,” said Anja Kroening-Maynard from Teignbridge CVS , “SOUP allows small projects and individuals to link with the wider community to make things happen.” The event was generously supported by local councillors and businesses and the winning project ideas walked away with £700 between them.
“We are over the moon,” said Lily Jones (14) and Abigail Boon (13) who won the largest number of votes and a whooping £225. They are planning a riding project for young people who may never have the opportunity otherwise, and will be supported by ROC.
Other winning pitches included Ollie Hill’s pitch for building an outdoor gym in Dawlish. Ollie (11) , who pitched for three youngsters, goes to Red Rock Youth Centre and was linked up with Dawlish Town Council to help. More money went to Anchor Youth Club, Dawlish 1st Explorers and to ROOTS Community Enhancement to contribute to introducing laughter yoga into schools to build resilience.
“It was good seeing all this positivity from young people and to see connections being made between individuals, groups and the town council ”, said Mark Jones from ROC, “we are very excited to see all these new opportunities for young people starting to take shape in Dawlish.”
