Teignbridge Volunteer Centre is the information and recruitment service for people who want to volunteer within Teignbridge. We match people with local charitable organisations and groups that need volunteers to support their work.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is an opportunity to: …learn something new, fill your spare time, meet new people, get involved in your community, improve your job prospects, build self-confidence and do something you enjoy!

What can I do?

The range of opportunities is enormous.

As a volunteer, you could be:

  • enabling a young carer to attend a social event

  • doing art and craft alongside people who are young, old or who have special needs

  • doing admin for a local charity

  • helping at a prison’s visitor centre

  • taking part in a conservation project

  • visiting patients on a hospital ward

  • helping children with activities

  • acting as an advocate for those who lack confidence or communication skills

  • answering a telephone helpline

  • putting up a homeless young person for a night

This is just a small sample of the hundreds of opportunities available locally.  The Volunteer Centre can tell you more about what’s involved, without any obligation.

Volunteering Opportunity of the Month

Scouting organisation is looking for helpers! Do you wish to support the the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities?

Group and Assistant Leaders are required, as is a Secretary and a Volunteer Administrator. Interested? Please contact the Volunteer Centre on 01626 215903.

What to do next?

Contact us! To get the best out of the Volunteer Centre it is good to arrange an appointment. Our experience shows, that taking time to find out about your interests, skills and motivations in a bit more detail enables us to give good quality advice and find the right volunteering opportunity for you. Alternatively we also offer phone and e-mail advice once you have registered with us.

Arrange an appointment      Register with the Volunteer Centre

The service is free, confidential and non-judgmental.

As a volunteer, just a little of your time could make the world of difference to a voluntary or community group. Without volunteers many organisations would not be able to provide valuable services to the local community. Plus volunteers frequently find they get a lot more out of it than they put in!

SUPPORT FOR VOLUNTEER INVOLVING ORGANISATIONS

If you need advice or information on any aspect of managing volunteers including developing policies, legal issues and working within a good practice framework please contact the CVS Development Worker, Katie Chaplin on 01626 215904 or email devworker@teigncvs.org.uk.

The Teignbridge Volunteers Organisers Forum, based in Newton Abbot provides people responsible for volunteers with a regular support, learning and networking opportunity.

If you need volunteers, you will need to register your organisation and your volunteering opportunity with the Volunteer Centre and then we will endeavour to match appropriate volunteers to your opportunity.

Teignbridge Volunteer Organisers’ Forum

The Forum was re-launched in June 08 and meets every 3 months in Newton Abbot. It provides volunteer organisers/managers/co-coordinators the opportunity to network and to share information and experiences in a supportive, informal environment. The group sets its own agenda and chooses a particular theme to focus on for part of the meeting. These have included looking at the implications of the new Independent Safeguarding Authority and dealing with difficult volunteers.  There is always time to deal with current issues and to hear from other members of the group.  The next Teignbridge Volunteer Organisers Forum - 4th August 2010, please click here for further information.

NEW ISA - WORKING WITH CHILDREN OR VULNERABLE ADULTS

From October 2009 If you want to work with children or vulnerable adults you will need to apply to be registered with the ISA.  You can apply  for registration through your employer if you don't have one, or if you are applying for a job, through your prospective employer.  If you are self-employed you will need to apply yourself.  You will be able to do this through the website as the ISA vetting service is phased in.
